San Diego City Guard Band

June 16 @ 6:30 pm7:30 pm

The San Diego City Guard Band is an all-volunteer community concert band that honors the musical heritage of San Diego’s original brass band founded in 1880. Managed by the non-profit Heritage Band Society, the ensemble performs a vast repertoire ranging from historical turn-of-the-century marches to modern film scores and show tunes.

📜 History & Heritage
    • 1880 Origins: Formed originally as an auxiliary unit to San Diego’s volunteer “City Guard” to serve local civic and protective needs. [1]
    • Exposition Fame: The band famously served as the official musical ensemble of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition held in Balboa Park. [1]
    • Disbandment: Following World War I, members left to join active military service or other regional symphony orchestras. [1, 2]
    • 1980 Revival: Exactly 100 years later, local musicians established the Heritage Band Society to bring back the band and maintain a massive historical sheet music library containing nearly 3,000 classic compositions. [1, 2]
